    It's Not Your Fault

If your family is struggling with money, that's not something you caused — and it's not something you should have to fix. But it can still affect how you feel, how you sleep, and how you cope at school. You're allowed to feel stressed about it.

    How Poverty Affects Mental Health

Growing up without enough money can mean constant worry, feeling different from friends, missing out on activities, food insecurity, and unstable housing. These aren’t small things — they’re real pressures that can trigger anxiety, low mood, and shame.
Worrying about whether there’s enough food at home
Feeling embarrassed about clothes, packed lunches, or not being able to afford trips
Taking on adult responsibilities too early
Living in overcrowded or temporary housing
Watching parents or carers struggle and feeling helpless

    You're Not Alone in This

Around 4.2 million children in the UK are living in poverty. That's nearly a third of all children. You might not see it because people don't always talk about it — but it's far more common than you think.

    What You Can Do

You might not be able to change your family’s financial situation, but there are things that can help you cope with the stress it causes.
Talk to someone you trust — a teacher, school counsellor, or youth worker
Access free school meals if you’re eligible (no shame in it — it’s your right)
Look into local food banks and community support near you
Use free resources: libraries, youth clubs, online learning, and free mental health support
Remember: your worth is never measured by what you have or don’t have

    Your situation doesn't define you

Money problems are temporary. Your mental health matters right now — and support is always free.
