When Things Feel Overwhelming
Your 5-step safety plan
When emotions feel too big to handle, these grounding steps can help bring you back to a place of safety.
Pause and breathe
Take three slow, deep breaths. In for 4 seconds, hold for 4, out for 4. This activates your body's calm response.
Ground yourself
Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. This brings you back to the present.
Reach out to someone
Call a helpline, text a friend, talk to a trusted adult. You don't have to explain everything — just saying 'I'm struggling' is enough.
Move to a safe space
Go somewhere you feel physically safe. Remove anything that could cause harm. You deserve to be safe.
Be kind to yourself
This moment will pass. Feeling this way doesn't make you weak — it makes you human. You've survived every bad day so far.
It's okay to not be okay
Reaching out is one of the bravest things you can do. There is no judgement here — only people who genuinely want to help you through this.
