Mental Health Support for Children is at a critical stage

Mental health issues are not just a concern for adults; they affect children and teenagers as well. However, a recent council investigation has found that many of these young people have been waiting for mental health support for up to two years.

This is unacceptable, and urgent action is needed to ensure that they receive the help they need.

The Investigation

A cross-party group of West Northamptonshire councillors conducted an investigation into the mental health support system for school pupils. Unfortunately, they found that the system was “worse than expected,” with some children and teenagers waiting for up to two years for support. This delay is a cause of concern, as it can lead to further deterioration of their mental health.

High Rates of Hospitalisation

The investigation was prompted by a study that found a much higher proportion of 15 to 19-year-olds being hospitalised from self-harm in Northamptonshire than the English average. The figures for 2019-20 show that 1,075 per 100,000 of Northamptonshire teenagers were hospitalised, compared with 665 per 100,000 across England. This indicates that there is a significant problem with mental health in the area.

The Failings of the Support System

One head teacher told the group that a mental health helpline “might as well not exist” because advisors direct people to an online form. This lack of personal support can leave children and teenagers feeling isolated and ignored. Additionally, too much expectation was placed on West Northamptonshire schools and their staff, who may not have the training or resources necessary to provide adequate support.

Recommendations

The investigation made several recommendations to improve the mental health support system for children and teenagers. These include providing more money to support services, setting up a new youth strategy, and letting organisations use empty council buildings to provide help. All of these recommendations were accepted by West Northamptonshire Council’s cabinet, and a formal response is expected by early May.

The Emotional Toll

The findings of this investigation are distressing. Young people should not have to wait for years to receive mental health support. The delay can lead to further deterioration of their mental health, which can have long-term consequences. It is crucial that urgent action is taken to address this issue.

Conclusion

Mental health is a crucial issue, and it is essential that we take it seriously, especially when it comes to children and teenagers. The findings of the investigation into the mental health support system in West Northamptonshire are alarming. Urgent action is needed to ensure that young people receive the help they need promptly.
